Baitul Mukarram is a significant mosque in the center of the city Dhaka
. The complex is located in an easy-to-access area near the business district in Dhaka city. Baitul Mukarram is the tenth largest mosque in the world, with a capacity of 30,000 persons. Its construction began in 1960, and it was opened in 1963. The Baitul Mukarram was designed by architect Abdul Hussain Thariani. As for the appearance, modern building blocks are mixed with traditional Islamic architecture. In fact, the architecture of the mosque resembles the Kaaba in Mecca. Baitul Mukarram is a noble building with richly decorated interiors. Extensive grassy area with fountains are directed to the east. Staircases lead to the Baitul Mukarram from the south, north and east. The eastern side , with a large terrace, is designed for prayers. The Baitul Mukarram includes also shops, libraries and offices.
