The fortification systems occupy an area of about 5 acres. Baba Vida was mainly designed for protection of the city Vida. The floor plan of this remarkable construction is an irregular trapezoid. The fort system includes four towers built of stone. There was a moat around the fortress which was filled with water from the Danube River, which allowed the Baba Vida resisting nearly eight-month long siege. The Baba Vida fortress is the Bulgarian historical monument of national importance. It is considered as one of the top tourist attractions in Bulgaria.
Baba Vida is the only fully preserved medieval castle in Bulgaria. The building is open to public, and it is very popular among filmmakers.
