Aveiro is a city in Portugal . It is situated in the north-western part of the country, in the region Centro. Aveiro is popular with tourists from all around the world for its unmistakable atmosphere. The city has about 55,000 inhabitants today.

Venice of Portugalska

Aveiro is often called Portuguese Venice as water is the dominant feature of the city and its surroundings. Aveiro is also characterized by contrasting colors. White houses have interesting decorations and the blue lagoon is studded with colorful boats called "moliceiros". There are also snow-white salt mines. The nearby nature reserve São Jacinto, which consists of many small islands, sand dunes and varied flora, contributes to the interesting cityscape. Those who are looking for sea and beaches can enjoy themselves at the near sandy beach Costa Nova, which is good for surfing, too.

Tourist attractions

There are many historical buildings in Aveiro, such as the Dominican monastery Convento de Jesús from the 15th century, which includes a renowned museum or the cathedral São Domingos from the 15th century. Another popular tourist attraction is the maritime museum Ílhavo a few kilometers away and the factory where the famous Portuguese porcelain Vista Alegre is made. You may also visit the near lighthouse , the highest lighthouse in Portugal and the whole Pyrenean Peninsula.

Little bit of history

Aveiro used to be a large and important port. The first records of the today's city come from the 10th century. In the past, the city prospered mainly due to the salt mines and later to cod hunt. Unfortunately, a strong tempest at the end of the 16th century clogged the entrance to the port and the city gradually declined. Today, Aveiro is a popular tourist destination.


Aveiro is best accessible by car, train or boat. By car, follow motorways A17 (IC1) , A25 (IP5) and A1 (IP1) . Within the city Aveiro, you may use the boats that sail on the canals or a bike that you can rent for free. The nearest airport, São Jacinto Airport, is located a few kilometers from the city.
