Augustus´ Gate was built in honour of the Roman Emperor Augustus in 27 B.C. It is the oldest preserved city gate from the period of the Roman Empire. The Augustus´ Gate was erected at the junction of ancient cities Rimini and Rome . It was was a part of the city fortification system as well as the entrance point to the city. In the 19th century the fortifications were demolished. Fortunately, the Augustus´ Gate has been preserved and become an important architectural monument.
At the gate, there are four statues, of which you can easily identify Neptune, looking towards the city, and Jupiter and Apollo in the opposite direction. The Augustus´ Gate and the Tiberius Bridge are the most important symbols of Rimini . It is good to come and see the monuments at night as they are perfectly illuminated.
