The Augustow Canal was built on the Polish territory in the first half of the nineteenth century. It was kind of a reaction to the Prussian decision on excessive taxes for Polish traders traveling through the Prussian territory. The Augustow Canal has become a widely-welcomed detour, along which the Polish traders could operate freely.
Augustow Canal is situated in the middle of a very attractive region. The area is covered with forests and there are seven glacial lakes which have been connected by means of the Augustow Canal. In addition, the canal runs through the Augustow virgin forest, which is considered as the locality of original Central-European natural environment. You may enjoy unusual plant and animal species and different types of birds on your journey along the canal.
Augustow Canal has become a very favourite attraction for lovers of water sports and fishing. You can often meet there canoes, kayaks, fishing boats and motor boats. A part of the canal can be visited on a sightseeing boat.
