In 121, the city was granted the Roman city status and for a few centuries remained the capital of the province. In the 12th and 13th centuries Augsburg obtained numerous privileges and rights and the city was growing rich. This independent city experienced its economical heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries thanks to business and banking activities. In 1540, a stock market was established there. During the Second World War, the city was heavily bombed and damaged..

Sights And Tourist Destinations

In the historic center there are many beautiful Renaissance buildings: The Town Hall with the "Golden Hall" and a tower, Virgin Mary Cathedral from the 12th century, St. Ulrich Church, St. Ann´s Church and the Fuggerei (the oldest social housing estate in Europe) . The Fuggerei in Augsburg comprises 60 houses. More than 100 needy families were put up there. Even today the yearly rent is as little as one Rhenish guilder, which corresponds roughly to 0.88 €. Furthermore, the city of Augsburg offers tourists also the Zoo, the Botanical Garden and rafting on the Olympic slalom canal, which was used for Olympic races. If you come at the end of August you might want to go and see the beer festival Augsburger Plärrer.

Museums In Augsburg

Tourists can visit several museums. The Fuggerei Museum presents the city history of the 16th century. The Augsburg Puppet Theatre Museum is recommendable both for adults and for children. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart´s family had connections to the city of Augsburg, that´s why we can find a museum dedicated to this famous family line - the Mozart House. The Maximilian Museum exhibits the city´s art collections. The Roman Museum in Augsburg presents findings from this area from prehistoric times till the period of early Christianity and early Middle Ages.
