Auckland is the largest city of New Zealand . It lies between the Waitemata and Manukau harbours on the North Island. The city is surrounded by the sea and the mountains. Auckland is called the City of Sails, thanks to the large number of sailboats and yachts anchoring in its ports. Auckland was founded on 18 September 1840 by British colonizers. The city was named after George Eden, the first count of Auckland. The city has many historical buildings and monuments. A nice stone bridge was built in Auckland in 1859. The oldest building in the city is the Acacia cottage from 1841. The tallest building in town is the Sky Tower . It is a television and a lookout tower reaching the height of 328 m. The local museum offers an exhibition of the Maori culture and also collections documenting New Zealand's nature. The most interesting exhibits of the museum is 25 m long war canoe and the giant creature - moa. The Hobson Wharf National Maritime Museum is devoted to yachts and ships. Other interesting sites in Auckland are the Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World with its attraction called Antarctic Encounter. In the water world you can see sharks, as well. A glass tunnel leads the visitors through the whole aquarium, while the fish and other aquatic animals are swimming all about. The Antarctic Encounter shows a replica of an old cottage from 1911. If we go through this cottage, we will get to a cold room where a group of penguins live, and where we can learn about the history of Antarctica. Furthermore, the city is a home to the Auckland Art Gallery, the Museum of Transport and Technology and the Auckland Zoo. Auckland lies on a series of extinct volcanoes and cones. Today they serve as natural parks offering nice views. The most interesting are Mt Eden and One Tree Hill. Mt Eden is 196 m high, and it offers a view of the city, and also a view into the crater. One Tree Hill is 183 m high, and on its top stands an obelisk in honour of the Maori people and John Campbell. Other well-sought places in Auckland are the Rainbow's End Adventure Park and the Montererey Park. Auckland offers marked hiking trails leading into the surrounding mountains, beautiful beaches and water parks.
