Atlanta is the largest and capital city of the American state Georgia. it is situated in the south-eastern part of the USA .

Historical background of the city

The area of today's Atlanta originally belonged to the Native American tribe Cherokee. The city was founded in 1837. During the Civil War, in 1864, General Sherman had a confederate fort built in Atlanta. In 1868, Atlanta became the capital of Georgia. In 1996, the Summer Olympic Games took place in Atlanta. Today, Atlanta is a significant traffic junction. The Coca-Cola Company is seated in the city, where it also has a museum dedicated to its history. The city is home to the news TV channel CNN. The CNN studio offers several guided tours to visitors. In the last couple of years, Atlanta is becoming a city of skyscrapers. There is a beautiful view of the city from the rotating restaurant on the 70th floor of the Peachtree Plazza Hotel.

Museums

There are many museums, theaters and galleries in Atlanta. The most sought-after of them is the Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum, where you can see the locomotive Texas that played an important role during the Civil War. The unusual Frenbank Science Center is a big museum with interesting exhibits and a collection of several complete dinosaur skeletons. In Atlanta, you can visit the largest museum dedicated to one famous person in the world, i.e. the museum of Martin Luther King Jr. (the National Historic Site) . Other museums worth seeing are dedicated to important personalities, such as President Jimmy Carter or Margaret Mitchell.

The largest oil painting in the world

The Cyclorama is a painting depicting the Battle of Atlanta in 1864, one of the battles of the American Civil War. It is the largest oil painting in the world- it is 13 m high and 110 m long.

Other places of interest in the city

In 2005, the world's largest aquarium was opened in Atlanta. In the city center, there is the Piedmont Park. In the Grant Park, you can visit a zoo and a botanic garden right next to each other. Another tourist attraction in Atlanta is the underground historical shopping and entertainment center.

The largest granite on Earth

Not far from Atlanta, you pay a visit to yet another extraordinary site, the stone formation called the Stone Mountain. It is a 250 m high rock and the biggest piece of granite on Earth. The pictures of the Southern generals Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are carved out into the rock. You can get to the Stone Mountain by a cableway.
