The name Astana was introduced in 1997. It became the official capital on 10th December 1997, and it has been developing very quickly since then. The old buildings, built during the Soviet period, were mostly replaced with new ones. Currently, the city has a population of some 708 thousand. .
Interesting facts
The dominating landmark of the city is the Bayterek, a tower which looks like a poplar-tree, which is a tree connected with an ancient legend about a magic bird Samuruk. The other tourist attractions are, for example, the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation (also called the Pyramid of Peace, built in 2006) ; the Islamic Center, built in 2005 and sponsored by the Emir of Qatar; the Ak Orda Presidential Palace ( 2004) , the official residence of the president of Kazakhstan; Monument Otan Korgaushylar; Memorial to the victims of political repressions; Church of Constantine and Yelena; and several museums. In 2010, an amusement park named Khan Satyry was built . It looks like a transparent tent, and comprises a shopping centre, an indoor park, an artificial river, a mini golf course, and an indoor beach. Transport
