The oldest record of the city comes from the Middle Ages, from the 12th century. Originally, there were four tribes that decided to unite and establish a settlement called Arbaete Asmara. The modern character of the city is the work of Governor Martini, who began to improve the city's infrastructure in 1897. Asmara was considerably damaged during the thirty years' Ethiopian occupation of the city. Asmara gained independence in 1991 along with the rest of Eritrea ..
