Ascona is a popular holiday resort in Switzerland. It is situated in the southern part of the country, and it is the lowest-elevated city in Switzerland .
About Ascona
The town has a population of approximately 5,000. It is a part of the canton of Ticino. Ascona is a former fishing village. It is located at Lake Maggiore, about 5 km from the town of Locarno Locarno . Due to favorable climate, it became a popular holiday destination in the early 1920s. There is a promenade with many exclusive hotels and shops. The lake offers good conditions for water sports and boat cruises. The inland valley is excellent for hiking tours. As for historical monuments, there is a Renaissance building with balconies (Collegio Pontificia Papio) , the Gothic church of Santa Maria della Misericordia, and the Church of St. Peter and Paul. Ascona is also the home to the Museo Communale with art collections from Utrillo, Klee and other artists.
