Arrowtown is the most picturesque and the best preserved gold-digging town in the Otago region. It stands on the South Island of New Zealand , about 20 km from Queenstown . Arrowtown saw its biggest boom around 1862, when a group of miners found gold in the Fox River. Within a few weeks, as many as 113 kg of gold was found here, and the city's population increased to more than 7 000 people. more »

After 1865, Chinese miners came to Arrowtown, who replaced the European miners. Visitors can still see the Chinese colony with stone buildings. The history of Arrowtown can bee seen in the Lakes District Museum - focusing on gold miners and their work. The museum is also the tourist centre of Arrowtown. Several well-marked hiking trails lead from the town, for example the Bush Creek Walkway, the Sawpit Gully Walkway and the Tobins Track with a fantastic view of Arrowtown and its surroundings.
