Later, around the 6th century, the Slavonic tribes settled in this area, followed by the Hungarians in the 10th century. Apatin is first mentioned in the 11th century in connection with the Kalocsa Abbey. Under the pressure from the Ottoman Empire from the south, the town was inhabited mainly by the ethnic Serbs. At the end of the 17th century Apatin became a part of the Habsburg monarchy. The most interesting buildings in the city are the Catholic Church of the Assumption of Mary from the 18th century, the Orthodox Cathedral and the City Hall. Apatin is a popular tourist destination due to its location on the Danube River.
