Anuradhapura used to be the capital city of Sri Lanka in ancient times and is probably the most significant historical city in Sri Lanka . In 1982, the city Anuradhapura was added to the World Heritage Site List UNESCO. It is situated in the northern part of the country, in the North Central Province, on the banks of the Malvathu River.

Significant city

Anuradhapura was definitely built way earlier than in the 4th century BC. Its name is derived from a star of the Scorpius Constellation. Historians have not yet agreed on the date of the city's foundation but it might have been somewhere around the 10th century BC. In this time, the city Anuradhapura became the center of Sri Lanka and maintained this status until the 11th century AD. The importance of the city is proved by the number of preserved parts of the original city. More than 40 sq km have been preserved from old Anuradhapura.

Monuments and the world's oldest tree

There is a great complex of well-preserved monuments of both historical and religious importance. The most famous of them is the fig called Bo Tree. It is reputedly the oldest tree in the world. According to a legend, it grew from a leave of a tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. The bell-like dagobas (pagodas) Ruwanweliseya and Thuparamaya tower above the whole complex of buildings. Their tops reach the same height as the as the Egyptian pyramids. The most significant monument is the Jetavanarama Dagoba - a temple that used to be more than 100 meters high in the time of its glory and was home up to 3,500 monks. If visiting Sri Lanka , it is a must-see monument, along with the mountain Sri Pada , for every history and religious culture enthusiast.
