Antwerp is the second largest port in Europe . It is situated on the river Scheldt, in Belgium , about 40 km north of the capital city Brussels .

History & Monuments

Antwerp became widely known in the 16th century, when it was the centre of the Western world with the population of 125,000. There are numerous historical monuments in the city - many churches, palaces, guild houses, and also the City Hall and the Cathedral originate from that period. In the 17th and the 18th century Antwerp declined but then became a major metropolis in the mid-19th century. Antwerp also boasts with one European unique; there is proud of the museum of modern sculpture in the open air. Definitely worth visiting is the oldest building in the city - the old castle erected above the harbor. Inside the castle a maritime museum has been installed.

The City of Diamonds

Among the most popular souvenirs from Antwerp are certainly diamonds. Antwerp is the center of the diamond trade and so 70% of all trade in this business is made there.
