Amsterdam is the largest city in the Netherlands . It is a popular tourist destination for people from all over the world.

A bit of history

Amsterdam was founded as a fishermen's village on the banks of the Amstel River in the 13th century. The town was proclaimed a city in 1300.

Venice of the north

In the 17th century, Amsterdam was the wealthiest city of Europe and a port of great importance. In that time, canals were built in its center for which Amsterdam is also referred to as Venice of the north. Today, many houseboats anchor there. In winter, the canals are popular among ice-skaters.
