In the 14th century, a wooden castle was built on the promontory above the confluence of the rivers Nemunas and Alytupis. In 1581, Alytus was granted the town privileges. In the 17th century, it was annexed to Poland. The town was repeatedly damaged as a result of wars. In the 19th century, Alytus became a part of Russia. In 1931, Alytus was one of the biggest Lithuanian cities- a fortification and artillery barracks were built at that time. Monuments
An obelisk built upon the place of a mass grave commemorates the victims of the Second World War. More than 60 000 murdered Jews were buried in these places during the war. In the part of the city- so-called the Old Garden- you can find the Angel of Freedom, which is the memorial dedicated to the partisans. The landscape around Alytus is extremely beautiful. There are several nature parks in the region. Not far from the city, you will find lakes Obelija and Didzilius, popular destinations among fishermen and canoeing lovers. In this area, you will also find the Zuvintas Biosphere Reserve, the National Park Dzukija, the Regional Park Meteliai and the forest Vidzgiris.
