Alston, in North Pennines, is the highest market settlement in England (1000 ft above sea level). Situated in the middle of heather-cladded Pennine landscape, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is is an ideal holiday destination if you seek for a calm place with a distinctive touch of the history. In Alston, you will enjoy the steep cobbled main street with a distinctive market cross, and many stone buildings dating from the 17th Century, e.g. the Angel pub (1611) (great! ). The town is popular due to delicious locally made specialities such as Cumberland Mustard and Alston Cheese.
