Alexandria is one of the most important harbours of Egypt . It is situated on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is the second-largest city of Egypt .

The city was founded in the year of 331 BC by Alexander the Great. The Ptolemaic dynasty took over the city after his death and made it their residential city. Under their rule, Alexandria was the most important city of the Ancient World after Rome. On the island of Faro, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — a lighthouse of Alexandria called Pharos— was built between the years of 299 – 279 BC. The city held a significant Library of Alexandria which was later destroyed. Alexandria was struck by an earthquake in 856. A substantial part of the town was ruined and ended up underwater. The importance of the city rapidly went down when the Arabs reached Egypt. The city blossomed again in the second half of the 19th century. A significant harbour was built and the city was connected to Nile.
