Åland Islands The Åland Islands form an archipelago of more than 6500 islands in the Baltic sea. It is a popular destination of many tourists due to its mostly flat areas convenient for cycling and temperate climate. The islands are the warmest part of Finland. They form an autonomous, administrative province of Finland with its own government and parliament. The area is demilitarized by historical agreement among France, Great Britain and Russia. The population is mostly Swedish-speaking. The Finnish State collects taxes, duties and fees also in Åland, but Åland cooperates also with EU. The capital of the Åland Islands is Marienhamn. The population of the province is about 30 000.
