The area of the today's town has been inhabited since the beginning of the Middle Ages. Åhus gained city privileges in 1149 but lost them in 1617. Åhus is a beautiful charming town with cobbled streets and adorable houses in its center. The oldest building in the city is the church Sankta Maria.
The beaches in Åhus have been a sought-after attraction since the end of the 18th century. The most beautiful of them are located in the protected area of the Hanöbukten Bay. There are kilometers of beaches with soft white sand. It is a popular site with the Swedes as well as e.g. the Germans. For those who do not fancy swimming in the sea, there is a heated 25-meters long swimming pool.
Åhus is an ideal place for an active vacation. There is a beautiful golf course called the Kristianstads Golf Club with 36 holes, which is one of the most popular courses in Sweden . You can also play football, handball, take aerobic courses, jog on a special round with lights, go horse-riding or canoeing. People who prefer spending time in nature can sail on the river Helgeå, which is also a protected area. Last but not least, you can visit the local vodka factory.
Åhus is known all over the world for producing the vodka Absolut as well as the volleyball tournament that takes place there every year. The tournament is among the biggest tournaments in beach volleyball in the world. About 20,000 people take part in it every year. Åhus is also known for the eels called "ålagille". Many people, not only from Sweden , come to taste this delicatessen in August and September.

Åhus is accessible by car, bus, plane and ship. By car, follow road n. 118. There is a regular bus link from Kristianstad , which you can comfortably reach by train and bus from other Swedish cities.
