Agra Fort is also known as Lal Qila, Fort Rouge and Red Fort of Agra. Emperor Akbar commissioned the building of the Agra Fort between 1565 and 1573 although additions were made till the time period of his grandson, Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan constructed palaces of white marble within the fort. And he was imprisoned in Agra Fort by his son, Aurangzeb, and died here in 1657. Agra Fort is the place where Shah Jahan spent the twilight of his life as a prisoner, gazing at the beautiful mausoleum he had built for his dear wife, Mumtaz Mahal..
