Aflaj is an irrigation system and the UNESCO Site in Oman . It is located in the northern part of the country, approximately 130 km southwest of the capital city Muscat . The irrigation system comprises five ancient irrigation canals used already in the 5th century BC. In fact, many of them have been in use even at the present time. Aflaj is a system in which the gravity takes water from underground sources through a several kilometre long canals to the fields. The irrigation system Aflaj was registered as the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006.
