Aachen is the westernmost German city. It is located near three borders - German , Dutch and Belgian . Historically, Aachen is one of the most important European cities.

History

In the Middle Ages, Aachen was the residence of kings and emperors, a place of their coronations and of Reichstag. The city at the foot of Eifel was a favourite residence of Charlemagne who had his palace built here.

Historical Sights

Aachen’s most precious gems include the Aachen Cathedral. The cathedral was listed under the UNESCO Heritage List in 1978. The most significant part of the building is the double-floor octagonal chapel from 796 – 805. The cloisters come from the 12th century. Interior is richly endowed. Charlemagne’s throne is lodged in the upper floor. In the cathedral’s vicinity you will find another architectural gem, a Gothic town hall adorned with monarchs’ statues and heraldry. Two gates remained from the Gothic fortification of the city. Aachen also has some spa houses with a spa park and a classicist colonnade with Elisa fountain.

Curiosities

There are several interesting museums in the city. The Zeitungsmuseum has an exposition about local and foreign magazines and newspaper. In the Couven-Museum you will see an exposition of the 18th and 19th century furniture and other equipment.
